WTD Context: Michael Knott’s Darker Underground

Lifesavers Underground is one of the clearest examples of Michael Knott pushing Christian alternative music into darker and stranger territory. Rather than staying inside the brighter rock sound associated with the earlier Lifesavers name, LSU moved through post-punk, gothic rock and punk, giving Knott space for a more confrontational and theatrical body of work. That makes the project an important bridge between the Christian punk underground and the artier alternative music that developed around labels such as Frontline, Blonde Vinyl and Alarma.

The catalogue also shows how restless the project was. Records including Shaded Pain, Wakin' Up the Dead, This Is the Healing, The Grape Prophet, Cash in Chaos, Grace Shaker and Dogfish Jones did not simply repeat one formula. The Grape Prophet and Dogfish Jones pushed into rock-opera territory, reinforcing the sense that LSU operated as a vehicle for Knott's more ambitious ideas.
